| Item# 40
AGE: c.1840's SIZE: 5" Squares LOCATION FOUND: Eastern NY DESCRIPTION: This is a collection of 12 very old quilt squares, calling out to be assembled into a quilting project or added to your collection of precious vintage fabrics. There are 8 different fabrics including a few vivid blue ombre (Rainbow, Fondue) prints and one chintz. Ombre was a technique used to print gradations in color during the 1820-1850 time period. The “stars” are pieced on an off white cotton muslin. The squares are hand pieced at 7-8 stiches per inch CONDITION: Considering these squares are over 150 years old, they are in good condition. All the squares have retained vivid color except for the fugitive purple, which now appears brownish. During this time period, the purple dye that was used was unstable and often reverts to tan. There are some age stains and uneven edges, which can be seen in the photos. One square shows signs of tendering (weakened or deterioration due to the chemicals used in the dyes).
